Project Title: Hydrogen and its isotopes at ultra high pressures
Abstract of Project :
During my Fulbright project, I will study hydrogen and its isotopes at extreme high pressures with the goal of observing metallization. The melting line of hydrogen and its isotopes will be extended above 300 GPa pressure using diamond anvil cells to verify the theoretical predictions of molecular - nonmolecular liquid phase transition and kinetically hindered metallic phase. In addition, the hydrogen sample in diamond anvil cells will be cooled to liquid helium temperatures and then studied at very high pressures of above 300 GPa to search for new phases using Raman spectroscopy and electrical conductivity. The project results will provide a theoretical base for understanding the complex quantum behavior and will have technological applications due to the high density and energy of the metallic hydrogen.
